The United Nations
The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. It is currently made up of 193 Member States. Its objectives include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict. The organization is financed by assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states. The current payment structure for UN Regular Budget dues sets maximum (22%) and minimum (.001%) rates for all nations based on their ability to pay. The U.S. pays the maximum rate and has negotiated several reductions in this rate over time, most notably from 25% to 22%. The assessment rate is primarily determined by gross national income, and since the U.S. has one of the highest in the world, its dues assessments are higher than those of other Member States.

DISCUSSION -
- 1 in 7 people in the world are hungry – they wake up in the morning and don’t know how they are going to fill one cup of food.
- We lose 1 child to hunger every ten seconds – that is more than HIV, aids, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.
- There are more people hungry in the world then in all of the United States and Europe combined.
- There is enough food on the planet for everyone to get 2700 kilo-calories of food, but the issue is access. There is not food to buy, or there is food, but not enough money to buy it.
