What you Need to Know for Ch. 2 Test
The 11 Body Systems and their Functions:
1. Circulatory – transports blood, nutrients, gases
2. Digestive – takes in, breaks down food – absorbs nutrients – eliminates solid wastes
3. Respiratory – controls breathing – exchanges gases
4. Excretory – removes both liquid and gas waste
5. Immune – defends body against infection
6. Endocrine- manufactures and releases hormones
7. Reproductive – producing offspring
8. Integumentary – skin/hair/nails – provides protective barrier
9. Skeletal – supports and protects – helps in movement
10. Muscular – move parts of the body
11. Nervous – detects surroundings - respond to stimuli
The Five nutrients that we need
· Carbohydrates
· Proteins
· Fats
· Vitamins
· Minerals
4 levels of organization
ORGAN SYSTEM Circulatory system
↓ ↓
ORGANS Heart
↓ ↓
TISSUES Cardiac Tissue
↓ ↓
CELLS Heart Cell
4 stages of Digestion and explain each
· Ingesting
· Digesting
· Absorbing
· Eliminating
Parts and Function of the Digestive system and order of food through
Mouth - pharynx – epiglottis – esophagus – stomach – small intestine (duodenum) – large intestine – rectum – anus
Label the excretory and respiratory system diagram
see the notes booklet and textbook
· Parts include: 2 kidneys – ureters – bladder – urethra
Parts of the heart and where the blood goes
- Atria – collect blood – Ventricles – pump blood
o Left Ventricle – pumps blood to the body
o Right Ventricle - pumps blood to the lungs
- Valves – found between chambers – blood only flows one way
Three blood vessels
Arteries – away from the heart (aorta –arterioles)
o Red – oxygenated blood – thick walls due to pressure
o Pulmonary artery – only artery to carry deoxygenated blood – to lungs
Veins – to the heart (superior/anterior vena cava – venules)
o Blue – deoxygenated blood – thinner and have valves
o Pulmonary vein – only vein to carry oxygenated blood - from lungs
Capillaries – one cell thick – mass between veins and arterie
§ where nutrients/oxygen/glucose are exchanged to
the cells from your blood
4 parts of the blood and what they do
- Plasma
- Red blood cells contain haemoglobin
- White blood cells – fight infection
- Platelets – clot blood
